Introduction

The Oblivion Quest List is intended to be a comprehensive guide to *good* quest mods for TES IV: Oblivion. It is a community project, in the sense that all of the mods here have been recommended by members of the mod community. Good quest mods are critical to the future of Oblivion modding, because without them people quickly get bored with plundering random dungeons, no matter how great the "eye candy" is.

History of the The Oblivion Quest List (TOQL)

This list was originally hosted on Knol under the acronym TOQL (The Oblivion Quest List). However, when Knol announced they were closing down their website as of May 1st, 2012 the community decided to save, refine and expand the list in a wiki format, and moved it here.

Please note that the transfer of data into the UESP will take some time, so please forbear adding material for a little while until the format is finalized and the original data has been moved over.

Thank you.

- The community

What makes a good quest?

A good quest must, at a bare minimum, have an in-game story, a goal, a challenge, and a conclusion. Preferably, this should involve characters that you meet and interact with (not just ones you need to kill), although this is not strictly necessary -- a quest can be communicated entirely through in-game books or notes, for example. Ideally, it should also include some lore to establish a background setting, history, etc., and make some attempt to fit into the Elder Scrolls world (or replace it) even if it doesn't adhere strictly to previous TES lore. A good quest should also, of course, include some reward, but this can mean a lot of different things given the story.

Above all, a quest should be fun, either because of the way it challenges you or because of the way it tells a story -- or, if you are really lucky, both of these elements.

If you have questions or feedback about these mods or the list itself, you can always post to the latest BethSoft Oblivion/Elderscrolls Forum thread [1]. Search for the thread with "TOQL" in the subject.

Submission / Editing / Review Procedures

Anyone can edit, submit, or review a quest mod. For the sake of consistency, please read the following information and adhere to the guidelines before contributing.

Adding New Entries

Using the template provided, fill out as much data as possible about the Quest mod. Do not just include the title, category and the links, that does not do anyone any good. The community has the prerogative to delete those kinds of submissions. Entries that have a little bit of information missing here and there due to not knowing the answer are okay. All entries should have a review/description.

Authors Submitting Their Own Mods

It is preferred that authors do not submit and review their own quest mods. If an author does wish to submit a mod, it must keep to the format, and the status should be "Author submitted". The description should be kept to one to three sentences, and rely on the actual download pages to sway the peruser. If a user reviews a quest mod, the description should be rewritten. Any notes from the author, if it is felt that they are needed to be kept, should be put in its own section.

Where To Place the Quest Mod Entry

Make sure to place the quest in the sub-section below according to the Size/Category, and in alphabetical order by mod title, ignoring "The", "A", and "An" in the title when deciding the exact placement. So "The Quest Mod" would be filed under "Q", not "T". There should be multiple line breaks between each mod so that it is fairly easy to separate them out.

Changes after Submission/Review

When a mod is reviewed, the description may be replaced in part or entirely by the reviewer, or multiple reviewers. If an author feels that a review is off or there is some error or omission, that information can be put in the Author's notes section. Please keep the notes brief to be fair to all of the entries.

Quest Entry Format

When submitting or editing a Quest Mod entry, please adhere to the following format (feel free to copy and paste the template and substitute out the information accordingly):

Mod Name: Name of The Quest Mod
Size/Category: Massive, Big, Mid-sized, Small, Companion (pick one) [*see notes below]

Description/Review: A VERY BRIEF description of the mod and the review. If author submitted, do not review your own mod, nor go overboard on the description, refer to your download links for more details.
Author's Notes: Should either be entered only by the author, or the reviewer if the reviewer is quoting the author directly. Should be kept short, and only have information if deemed absolutely necessary.

Status

Submitted by Author = the author of the mod has submitted it to the wiki, but it has not been reviewed. We expect authors to be ethical about this.

WIP/Beta = the mod is still in development, and the review should be read in that context. It is recommended that authors do not submit their own mods for review while they are still a WIP/Beta, as it may do you a disservice.

Released = the mod is officially released and available to the public.

Size/Category

Following are brief descriptions of the different categories (as of April 9, 2012). These definitions have slightly redefined criteria from the old website. If you feel any particular quest is in the wrong category, make sure to relocate it to the proper section, and address your reasons why in the discussion page.

Massive Quests: These quest mods are ridiculously enormous, either because they involve a lot of elements, are long and complex, or because of their sheer scope. Examples would be along the lines of a new world space with at least one major town, and a main quest line with at least 5 moderate sized quests or a wide reaching series of quests with about 40-50+ quests, multiple guilds, and/or branching storylines also factor in.

Big Quests: These quest mods are very large and in depth, with lots of details and complexities. Examples would be along the lines of a new guild with 10-20 quests or a new world space with a few misc quests.

Mid-sized Quests: These quest mods are just the right size! These are longer quest mods, or they add a lot of new things to the game. Examples would be along the lines of a quest line that includes anywhere from 3-10 small quests with some detailed content.

Small Quests: Great things can come in small packages! These mods may be small, but they add a huge amount of quality to the game. Examples would be along the lines of some small changes or additions to the vanilla guilds/quests, short quest lines made up of only 1-3 quests, etc.

Companion Quests: These quest mods revolve around NPC companions. Many of these quest mods don't fit neatly into one of the other categories. Some are small and some are massive, but they're all good.

Hours of Play

If the hours of play involve more traveling and going from place to place than interactive content, you should probably mention that as a caveat in the description. It should be filled out with the minimum number of hours at maximum efficiency, without cheating. Something along the lines of 10+ or perhaps 20-25 +.

Number of Quests

For the approximate number of quests, it's a judgment call as to whether or not to split out sub-quests. A side quest is a quest you can choose to do or not, and should be considered in the quest count, a sub-quest is it's own quest that shows up in the log, but is actually part of a much larger quest thread. So if that main quest is already included in the count, you probably should not include it's sub-quests in that count, but put them in parentheses to the right. So, it would be filled out as: 1-3 (5-6).

Tags

These should be one or two word keys separated by commas to help people easily find what they are looking for. Examples might be: Voiced, Lore Friendly, Character Oriented, Combat Oriented, Puzzle Solving

Lore Friendly Rating

This is a judgment call. Your best guess on a scale of 0 to 5. Half points are fine. So 3.6 would be an acceptable rating.

Rating Lore Type Description
5 Represents that all of it matches up with the known lore, or at least doesn't conflict directly with it (any typical new castle/village quest).
4 Represents that it matches with known lore, but perhaps takes it's own liberties at filling in the gaps and holes with its own content (Dark Brotherhood Chronicles, Kvatch Rebuilt, Bruma Mages Guild Restored for instance).
3 Represents that most of it matches up with the lore, but perhaps a few elements don't EXACTLY match up, but they *could* theoretically be if you let your imagination stretch (Lost Spires comes to mind, but I never got to far into it, so I'm not 100% sure, and some other examples might be nice).
2 Represents somewhat lore friendly, but perhaps either some revisionist history going on, or introducing one or two elements that don't really fit (perhaps a new deity, or new culture, could use some examples here).
1 Represents that it does not at all match up with the lore, such as drawing in elements from other games, books or our own history and culture which fall outside of The Elder Scrolls universe.
0 Represents that the mod introduces content that absolutely does not belong in the Oblivion world, such as introducing guns or science fiction or space related content, like Indiana Jones IV.

Lore Friendly Rating: 5
Entry Last Updated: 14 Apr 2012
Description/Review: Integration: The Stranded Light is an uniquely different quest mod. It deeply integrates your race, attributes/skills, and achievements in both Cyrodiil and The Shivering Isles into your options of completing its quests. The quests often have many solutions, usually tied into these aspects of your character. It includes more than 80 quests with a strong emphasis on thinking, character interaction, choices, consequences, and lore. A new, joinable guild plays an important role in many of the quests, which often focus on thinking rather than combat, social skills instead of fighting. It also reaches beyond the typical mold of quest mods, seeking to enrich the existing game world as whole by breathing new life into previously ignored aspects of the game, such as the "news" printed in the The Black Horse Courier. The quests don't all follow a single storyline. It's more like a collection of short stories than an epic novel. In addition to the new guild, you will also find interesting quest rewards inspired by the Less Annoying Magic Experience (LAME) mod, a new form of transportation, and enchanting/spellmaking capabilities for those not in the Mages Guild, a multistage in-depth optional romance, the first Shivering Isles guild, and so much more!

This mod used to have two mod requirements, but now has a version that only requires the Shivering Isles DLC Only use the requirements version if you have RBP and LAME

Can you find the keys required to break the seals so you can face Kragenir inside the tower before he escapes? Or... Are you going to help him? With over 100 new quests, 15+ new books and over 3000 lines of dialogue this mod will hopefully keep you entertained for many hours! Mod Name: Nehrim: At Fate's Edge
Size/Category: Massive
Status: Released
Author: SureAI Productions
Current Version: 1.5.0.8
Version Date: 31 Dec 2011
Links: Homepage
Requirements: n/a
Hours of Play: 100+
# of Quests (Sub Qs): 35 (30)
Tags: New lands, voiced
Lore Friendly Rating: 3 (see below)
Entry Last Updated: 14 Apr 2012
Description/Review: Nehrim is a massive total conversion that creates an entirely new world. The landmass is about the size of Cyrodiil, made completely from scratch. Unlike Oblivion, Nehrim's main quest is quite prominent; it features 35 parts, and there are 30 side quests as well. Although Nehrim is a fantasy setting like Oblivion, many other things are different: it uses experience points to level up; fast travel is disabled and guilds are absent; there is no level-scaling, and powerful items are both very rare and very hard to find. As a total conversion, Nehrim is not compatible with most Oblivion mods. You can use BOSS to see which mods are compatible, as well as the proper load order.

Lore Friendly Rating: TBD
Entry Last Updated: 14 Apr 2012
Description/Review: More than a year in the making, this mod brings together two of the most compelling story-driven mods released to date -- The Legacy and The Butcher of Armindale -- merging them into a unified storyline that will rock your world like nothing else has before. Includes the complete story/quest arcs from The Legacy and The Butcher (see the separate listings for those mods below) along with a new conclusion that takes place after the events in both of the original mods. Like the originals, this is a complex, multi-pathed quest/companion adventure that spans numerous encounters with more than 4,000 lines of dialogue, all driven by a powerful and riveting story. There are multiple paths you can take through the quests, each resulting in varying encounters and endings depending on your choices and actions. An instant classic, to be sure. Does not include voice acting. Note that you must not run this at the same time as The Legacy or The Butcher of Armindale -- if you have either of those mods, you must remove them before loading this one. The 1.2 update adds a massive new quest called Redemption that can be played during the main part of the story or afterward (if you've already completed TotF 1.0). TESNexus Mod of the Month for July 2007.

Mod Name: Windfall

# of Quests (Sub Qs): 50+
Tags: New lands
Lore Friendly Rating: TBD
Entry Last Updated: 14 Apr 2012
Description/Review: This is a massive, story-driven quest mod that takes place in the once prosperous city of Windfall, on an island south of Anvil. The mod lets you play through as many as 52 different quests spanning multiple storylines set on the island. With several factions vying for dominance of the city, your actions and choices will help determine the course and outcome of the stories. Will you help the rightful ruler put down a rebellion and restore peace to the city? Or will you help the peasants overthrow the oppressive ruler and liberate the city? The choice is yours. And what of the rest of the island and its inhabitants? This is a great mod for low-level characters, and should also scale up fairly well for higher-level characters. In the grand tradition of Morrowind, there's not much handholding here, so you'll need to figure out a lot of things on your own (without the help of quest markers) and you'll often need to talk to more than one NPC to figure out what's going on. No voice acting yet.

Mod Name: Artifacts of Tamriel 300
Size/Category: Large
Status: Released
Author: Marine OKeefe (Cleitanious/Modder 300/ByblosHex)

Requirements: n/a
Hours of Play: TBD
# of Quests (Sub Qs): TBD

Lore Friendly Rating: 5
Entry Last Updated: 14 Apr 2012
Description/Review: This mod adds many classic TES artifacts to Oblivion. The book "Tamrielic Lore" tells of the greatest known artifacts and relics of Tamriel, along with hints as to their locations. Be wary, however, as the current owners of these mighty items are not going to hand them over without a fight. Each weapon and armor has its own new models, textures and icons. Their powers and stats are the same as found in the previous Elder Scrolls games. They include such famous items as the Bipolar Blade, the Fang of Haynekhtnament, the Ice Blade of the Monarch, the Mace of Slurring, Chrysamere, Eleidon's Ward, the Fists of Randagulf, the Lord's Mail, Ten Pace Boots, the Dragonbone Armor, and Gambolpuddy.

Mod Name: The Ayleid Steps
Size/Category: Large
Status: Released
Author: Ervvin
Current Version: 3.5
Version Date: 1 Apr 2012
Links: TESNexus, TESAlliance, Planet elder Scrolls (v 3.4)
Requirements: OBSE
Hours of Play: TBD
# of Quests (Sub Qs): 11, plus 40 new dungeons
Tags: Ayleid, dungeons
Lore Friendly Rating: 4
Entry Last Updated: 14 Apr 2012
Description/Review: Ever wondered just what all those ancient Ayleid stones were supposed to do? This large quest mod follows the premise that the stones once formed a massive teleportation network. The introductory quest teaches you how to use Welkynd Stones to activate the "Steps", which can then teleport you directly into Ayleid ruins, Ayleid wells, and many other locations the Ayleids once considered important. Once you start exploring the Steps, you're in for plenty of surprises, deadly situations, and a hefty dose of addictive adventuring goodness. Many of the Steps are defective and will refuse to work, or beam you to random locations. You can land in someone's basement, in government buildings, in caves in the middle of a bunch of goblins, and in very remote and unusual places. Or you can discover sunken ruins, hitherto unknown to man, where lots of treasure and enemies await you. You can play this one for a long time. Includes about 800 Steps and 40 new dungeons, many of which have several levels to explore. TAS is compatable with most other mods; the readme contains a complete list.

Description/Review: This incredible mod adds a new town, a new island village, numerous NPCs, and much more -- it now has 24 quests, many of which are repeatable! It features very good voice acting for all the dialog, and excellent quests.

Ruled by Count Serverus Victrix, Bartholm is a small town consisting of a Castle, Arena, Inn, General Store, Chapel, Stables, Mages' Guild, and eight houses. The village of Slartholm, situated on the Isle of Slart, includes an Inn, General Store, Blacksmith, Barracks, Alchemist Tent, and three houses. In Bartholm, you can engage in a number of quests, fight in the Arena and become Champion, or buy a house and settle down. If you get bored in town, you can join the Bartholm Foreign Legion, travel to the island village of Slartholm, help defend the island from a Maormer attack, go hunting pirates on the high seas, and much more. The quest dealing with the count and his family is particularly well done (you can side with either the Dark Brotherhood or the count).

Now is your chance to experience the adventure from the Blackwood Company's point of view!

Great replayability; play it through a second time to see what effect choosing the other path would have. Wizards and dragons and minions come forth as two massive dragons threaten an already weak Cyrodiil.

Lore Friendly Rating: 5
Entry Last Updated: 14 Apr 2012
Description/Review: This mod makes the invasion of Cyrodiil by Mehrunes Dagon's forces dramatically more interesting, realistic and intense. Dremora will actually attack the cities, while the Imperial Legion and even other heroes will attempt to defeat them. Citizens, guild members, and even bandits can be recruited to help defend the land. If you have achieved a high rank in the Fighters Guild or Mages Guild, you gain the added benefit of being able to recruit much stronger allies for these battles. Or, if you play a less honorable character, you can recruit bandits and marauders to help in the fight. If you like a real challenge and a lot of big battles, this mod's for you. Do not add this mod to your game if you want to avoid dealing with the invasion. Can be FPS-intensive. Greatly increases the difficulty of Oblivion gate encounters, especially if you are low level. Is compatible with FCOM via a patch included in the download.

Description/Review: Hand of Dawn is a mod for players who enjoy Vampirism but get easily annoyed with having to deal with the effects of not feeding every 24 hours to keep the NPCs happy with you at the cost of greater powers and abilities.

By retrieving books, notes, etc. within the storyline of the quest, players will receive journal updates pointing them to the next location. These books and notes relate the tale of a mage who began trying to study Vampirism in order to create a controlled form of it, due to the great increases in a person's physical and magickal states, and eventually reveal the final results.

Mod Name: Heart of the Dead
Size/Category: Large
Status: Released
Author: Middark
Current Version: 6.5
Version Date: 10 Jun 2011
Links: TESNexus, Planet Elder Scrolls, TES Alliance
Requirements: DLC Shivering Isles
Hours of Play: 15+
# of Quests (Sub Qs): TBD
Tags: Companions, voiced
Lore Friendly Rating: TBD
Entry Last Updated: 14 Apr 2012
Description/Review: This quest starts out as an artifact-MacGuffin seeking quest and expands into something much bigger. A dying beggar asks the player to help him find an artifact that will allow him to communicate with his deceased wife. While seeking the Heart of the Dead, the player encounters not only the usual thousand enemies but many excellent NPCs, puzzles, traps, prizes, and the lore of old gods and new. It's a long quest that will take you all over Cyrodiil. This mod is Morrowind-lore-friendly and even adds some intelligent lore for the Mystic Elf race.

Along the way you'll team up with several companions, and your choices in dealing with them will make them open up to you or not. The author has cleverly set up the armor and bodies of NPCs necessary to the mod so that they cause no errors regardless of any body mods or cosmetic mods the player uses. The dialogue and rewards take into account the player's gender and specializations; the quest does not project motives and history onto the player nor assume that the player character is human and male. There are also a couple of creepy and incredibly immersive dream sequences. There's a home and companion reward at the end, but there are also a few other goodies to be picked up along the way. This mod is about its journey, not its destination, and is worthwhile for that as well as for its clever use of new assets and excellent utilization of the old ones. Suggested for characters of level 15+. PlanetElderScrolls Top 10 for January 2009.

Description/Review: This mod rebuilds Kvatch into a fully functional city. Almost every building is occupied and every citizen has a life of their own. Provided you saved Kvatch, you enter the city as the Hero of Kvatch and have the option to become Count of Kvatch and control its developement. From then on, you will need to speak to various people to find new quests that will allow you to improve the city further. Some NPCs may not have any quests for you at first, but as you develop the city, their needs will grow and more quests will become available. Most quests cost you money, but some are combat-related.

Each quest leads to ever more expensive improvements becoming available. Some renovations benefit you directly, but most will improve the city itself. Eventually, you will finish upgrading Kvatch and it will become the city it once was. Kvatch's citizens enjoy walks in the memorial gardens, but most like to drink and can be frequently found in one of the two pubs when they are not busy. Others will visit the rebuilt castle and admire the trophy cabinets. Kvatch has an active night life, but most people are in bed by midnight, especially since the ghosts of former citizens who died during the battle may haunt the areas they once knew.

Recent versions include changes to the Kvatch-related quests ("Breaking the Siege of Kvatch" and "The Battle for Castle Kvatch"). If you would rather play the original versions of these quests, simply wait until after the second one is completed before activating Kvatch Aftermath.

Description/Review: The latest masterpiece from prolific author Simyaz, Malevolent is a complex, multi-pathed, story-driven quest mod revolving around the player's relationship with a sentient suit of armor called "The Armour of Malevolence." The Armour is a charismatic, manipulative and deceptive personality who likes to consider himself "Articulate Evil". After the player dons the armor for the first time, this personality decides to invade a quiet corner of the player's mind and call it his home. The story that evolves from that point changes depending on the relationship the player has with the Armour, and whether you choose to resist the Armour's whims or submit to them (or any combination of the two). Malevolent has a strong focus on philosophy, metaphysics, and pseudo-psychology. It uses various design techniques such as color-contrasting to separate the real from the surreal and the wholly imaginary. Although not all dialog is voice-acted, it does feature a large number of voice-acted lines for the main characters. TESNexus Mod of the Month for July 2008.

Description/Review: This quest mod revolves around Umbra the Sword, which is among the mightiest weapons to have ever been forged in Tamriel. Created by an ancient witch, who was executed for bringing a weapon of such unadulterated evil into the world, it exists for one thing and one thing only: to slay all things that come in its path and consume their souls. Men and mer, kings and paupers, heroes and villains, and even daedra have all bled for Umbra, their Anima devoured by the ever-hungry blade. This is an extremely tough, multi-stage quest with very harsh conditions, but the rewards are well worth it. It provides a true-to-lore expansion of Umbra the Sword's history and makes the sword into a living entity with a deep thirst for blood and souls. This mod is highly recommended for those who relish extreme challenges.

Description/Review: This mod adds quests to recover 14 unique artifacts. Each weapon has a story filled with clues that you must decipher and follow in order to find the weapons. The quests are designed for high-level players. Finding these weapons at a low level will be impossible for some, and the weapons will likely be overpowered for low-level characters if you do find them. The difficulty of the quests ranges from moderate to insane. This is intentional since the weapons are powerful and the difficulty is commensurate with this. To start, you must seek out various books at merchants in various cities. Don't forget to add the update.

Description/Review: A man named Alex is searching for help in Bravil. He wants you to retrieve the Elemental Stones from the temple and light the Elemental Lighthouses with them, so the elements in Tamriel will be balanced. But, are Alex's intentions really that noble? Did he really tell you everything? And who is this Wise One, who tries to prevent you from lighting the lighthouses, saying you are making a mistake? Loosely based on the GBA game Golden Sun, this mod focuses on puzzle-action challenges rather than fighting-action. You'll have to go through a series of puzzle challenges to collect the elemental stones and then another series to light the four elemental lighthouses. Examples of these challenges include running over a crumbling bridge while avoiding falling rocks, finding your way through a maze with invisible paths in the air and lightning shooting stones, and so forth. Even fairly low-level characters should be able to survive if your wit is quick. Not compatible with Open Cities: Bravil because Alex will never show up. Also, don't try to bring any companions because they will get stuck.

Description/Review: Acting as a sequel to the Oblivion main quest, Verona House: Bloodlines is an epic story that pits the player against a sinister cult and its charismatic leader. Often described as more of an expansion than a mod, there's no doubt that the scale of the quest is massive. It features roughly 20 hours of new gameplay spread across 11 challenging quests. You will battle your way through huge multi-level dungeons, entire cities and a new plane of oblivion. VHB is filled with engrossing stories, fabulous characters, immersive details, and full voice acting throughout. It includes many custom weapons, clothing and armor. The eponymous Verona House, set in the village of Verona, is the ultimate prize for the quest. The house itself is one of the very best house mods, filled with wonders and delights in ever corner. TESNexus Mod of the Month for March 2008.

There is a conflict with Servants of the Dawn that prevents VHB from starting as expected. SOTD alters the player's Champion status, which is a prerequisite for VHB to start. The workaround is to open the console (~) and type "Setstage VHQ000 10" then go to Verona Bay and talk to an NPC named Salvo Harding.

Make sure to download the fixed version created by Arthmoor, as DTom abandoned the project awhile ago.

Description/Review: Lost Sword of the Ayleids adds a cross-country treasure hunt to Oblivion. Clues and journal hints are used to guide the player rather than quest markers. The hints and clues are clever. Unless you have never played Oblivion before, you shouldn't have many problems figuring out what to do next. The quest will lead you across Cyrodiil to existing locations in search of the mysterious clues and leads to an ultimate showdown with a shadowy guardian. The sword is one of the more unique weapons crafted for the game. Inspired by the Elven Longsword, this blade is unique in both appearance and function. The last part of the quest is nicely staged and the boss fight is excellent. The mesh of the sword is really nice. The mod includes full voice acting and excellent dialogue. This is a mid- to high-level quest, depending on how you play. A follow-up, "Armor of the Fallen" is planned.

Description/Review: Steeped in the lore of ancient Cyrodiil, this fantastic adventure is a dungeon crawling tour de force. It features a vast dungeon full of mysteries to be solved, secrets to be discovered and dangers to survive. This is not just another typical Oblivion dungeon. It uses a completely new, custom dungeon tile set modeled after medieval vaults. The backstory is excellent. The dungeons are pitch black and best experienced with a trusty torch or light spell (torches on the walls can be lit, too). It's filled with numerous puzzles and it may take you many hours (if not days) to find your way out, so come prepared to be scared! Recommended for characters in the L 20-30 range. Description/Review: A lore-heavy short quest, featuring excellent voice acting, high quality writing, and moderate rewards. Well suited to low-level characters. Almost unique among quest mods, the initial release contains no combat. Et in Arkay Ego introduces your character to a non-violent heretical cult, one dedicated to the proposition that Arkay, god of the life cycle, was born a mortal, and is now dead. Your character will travel through Cyrodiil to uncover the truth, meeting prophets, a bard, knights and cultists along the way. You may even meet a goddess. Includes new books and new locations. Rewards include a useful new power, and a well done and unusual new player home. The writing and voice acting are the strong points of this mod. The books are also entertaining, giving an in-depth look at the mod's back story, and are worth the download on their own. Some of the books and dialog assume that the character has already passed certain benchmarks in the main quest and the Knights of the Nine. This may be problematic if completing the mod with a new character.

The mod could be described as lore-compatible; the idea that some believe that Arkay was born mortal was presented in the book Arkay the God, giving the mod's cultists a foothold in Elder Scrolls lore. Plans are in the works for the next release of the mod to feature some combat encounters and to address some of the mod's timeline issues. As it stands now, Et in Arkay Ego is a good choice for players interested in exploring Cyrodiil's geography along with the Imperial Cult's theology.

This mod is intended for mature gamers, as it has sexual themes and references throughout.

Description/Review: Gates to Aesgaard - Episode One explores the story of Ashen Rose, first mentioned in the Red Sonia companion mod. You learn that Rose and your character were partners, and that the partnership ended badly. A letter arrives from Rose, asking for your help and leading you on a journey into horror and madness. Gates to Aesgaard - Episode One is essentially a series of fairly straightforward dungeon crawls and side trips into new exteriors, with new lore relating to the alternate world space of the mod revealed through books and visions. Custom creatures and items and innovative dungeon design make this an adventure you'll remember, but the Clive Barker-style of the horror aspects may not suit the tastes of all players. The mod is dark, disturbing, and rich in its own lore. If you are a fan of this style of horror, then you'll enjoy the trip. Quest rewards include a modest player-owned home and some useful but not overpowered items.

Note that the mod's lore, while not contradicting TES lore, is largely separate. Atmosphere is everything in the Gates to Aesgaard series, and the rise and fall in tension is generally handled well in Episode One. There are areas that could use improvement, but on the whole this is an excellent ride through a very dark story.

Description/Review: Gates to Aesgaard - Episode Two finds your character drawn back into the horrific tale of Ashen Rose, given hope that all is not yet lost for his old partner. Although Rose's story was previously explored in Episode One, it is not necessary to have played the previous episode to follow Episode Two. The Priest and his mod team have clearly learned from the previous installment of the series; adventure design elements that were merely good before, here become exceptional. Amazing world spaces, astonishing dungeons, disturbing cinematic sequences and creature designs combine for a roller coaster ride through an adventure that feels like Clive Barker writing a Conan novel. The mod is Lore Neutral, introducing considerable mod-specific lore that does not directly contradict TES lore. Quest rewards here are primarily custom items and cash. The adventure is linear and this style of horror won't suit every player's tastes, but the mod itself is exceptionally well put together.

Description/Review: This mod is a series of well done short quests to earn a very nice castle, but that's only the start. Hoarfrost castle sits above the Orange Road, commanding fine views and conveniently out of the way of most quest mods. To win it, you must first drive off the undead who hold it now. But it's not enough to own an empty building; a castle needs revenue, guards and servants. You'll have to quest for those as well. Finally, there's the unraveling of the curse that has twice brought ruin to those who held Hoarfrost.

The castle interior is nicely laid out. While not as feature rich as the Ancient Towers or as luxurious as Glenevar Castle, when complete you'll receive all the basics (beds for you and your companions, storage space, a display room), plenty of extras, and a weekly cut of the castle's income. After the quests you go through to earn these features, none of them feel like unbalanced rewards. Hoarfrost Castle's real appeal comes from the NPCs you recruit to staff it. The secretive steward, the young and idealistic smith, the practical cook, the brave yet haunted captain of your guards, and the blind sorceress. Additionally, you'll help out the headman of the local farmers and his wife, and encounter an entertainingly vile noble. The NPCs have detailed back stories, and there is more than enough romance and tragedy between them to appeal to your inner soap opera fan. Castle Hoarfrost offers clean quest design, memorable NPCs, and balanced rewards that you'll keep on using. No voice acting. TESNexus Top 100.

Description/Review: A wandering weaponsmith gives you an offer - he'll make you a sentient weapon if you can just get him all the materials. It promises to be powerful, but also potentially comical, as the weapon will audibly comment on your adventures as you go. You'll get to choose the type of weapon you want and choose between three different personalities for the weapon (or all three!): Fred the Coward, who is an eternal pessimist; Atkivir the Murderer, who delights in misery and killing; and Samson the (wanna be) Hero, who's just a regular guy and isn't terribly special. The mod includes more than 800 lines of voice-acted dialog for the weapon. Each personality also has mildly different combat abilities, but this is especially true if you make a critical hit (which is fairly rare). A critical hit from Fred might make the enemy run away, one from Atkivir deals heavy damage, and one from Samson cripples their combat abilities. Also includes three mini quests -- one for each personality. Help with a task involving a past problem and you can find out more about their lives. Completing a weapon task makes that weapon more powerful, and gives it a hated enemy, so that the more of the specific foe you defeat, the more powerful your weapon gets! If you also use Francesco's Leveled Creatures-Items mod or Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, there's a compatibility patch to rebalance the Sentient Weapon stats in accordance with OOO/MOBS stats.

If you prefer Sentient Weapon I, you can find v 3.1 on the Nexus or Planet Elder Scrolls

Description/Review: This small voice-acted quest mod works really well during the Oblivion main quest. You discover the Imperial City has been targeted by Daedric forces. Now you will be the first to find their recon team and defend the city! An ancient Dwemer artifact has been discovered and it will be your weapon against the Daedric infiltrators, provided you can figure out how to use it. The main draw is getting to shoot down Daedric airships with a Dwemer cannon, but the mod does also add some lore about the invasion. To start, find Scarlet Brimstone, a Breton Legion spellsword, in the Elven Gardens district of Imperial City.

Note: The version on StrayGenius (but apparently not the one on the Nexus) fixes incorrect references to the area around Fanacasecul.

The other two quests follow success in the first quest. To get started, visit the Imperial City Waterfront and look for Charles Dexwood.

Note: Users have noted that the items you get in this are seriously overpowered.

Description/Review: This mod is an attempt to improve roleplaying in Oblivion by giving the player more conversation options with NPCs during quests, providing different ways to complete certain quests, allowing the player to refuse quests he/she does not want to do (through dialogue, not just ignoring the quest), altering certain journal entries to give a more neutral summary of events, modifying changes in fame/infamy to better correspond with good, neutral, or evil decisions. The main focus of the mod is on the "major" miscellaneous quests, as they seem the most restrictive in terms of roleplaying (all characters get them, so all characters should be able to complete them in a fitting way). Bethesda was focused on designing these quests for good characters, so most of the changes add options for neutral or evil characters, as the good options are already well-integrated. However, there are a few cases where the good choice is not so well represented, and those have been changed as well.

Description/Review: This mod is not exactly lore-friendly, but it does make a creative effort to explain the existence of Ninjas in Cyrodiil, and it does a great job of adding Ninja-style adventure to Oblivion with a very tough quest. Designed to be played with a new character, the story starts when you first create your character (includes a new Ninja class you can play). Be warned that it will take some time to complete the quest this way since it's designed for a high-level character (30+). Includes new Ninja-themed weapons, armor, and spells. The quest involves a new location -- "The Forgotten Shrine of Shinobi" -- which acts as a sort of obstacle course full of puzzles, traps, and dangerous enemies intent on keeping you from completing the mission. No voice acting. Highly recommended for Ninja fans, but probably not for lore-freaks.

Note: There are links and discussions of a 1.5, and a 2.0 in the works. However, the author has not posted any updates or information regarding these developments since April of 2010, so the likelihood of newer versions coming any time soon are low.

Description/Review: One of the best Oblivion house quest mods yet. The quests are long and challenging, and you have to use your brains to solve them, but the prizes are worth the effort. The history behind the quest and the castle is really good and the dialogues have a great sense of humor. The castle is gorgeous and has tons of extra touches you won't find in other house mods. This mod lets the player embark on a rather elaborate quest to possess one of the finest monuments in Tamriel, Glenvar Castle. It's an abandoned stronghold located on the Green Road, south of the Imperial City, near Charcoal and Horn Caves. Find the Inn of Ill Omen, where a merchant named Vilandor will get you started on a great and dangerous adventure. Glenvar Castle is not for sale - it has to be earned. Once you have disposed of the bad guys, you'd better start earning some money to repair the castle and hire the necessary servants (up to 18 different NPCs).

But that's not all. A few days after you become the owner of the castle (countdown starts the first time you fast-travel to Glenvar), one of your guards will offer you the possibility to go out on a second quest. This second quest is probably even more challenging than the first one. Hint: none of the secret activators will display the typical hand icon, so be warned. Use your brain to figure things out. If you don't have one, at least use your eyes and pretend you're clever. An add-on mod brings voice acting and lip animations to the mod!

Description/Review: This mod takes Mazoga the Orc's story to a new level. It adds new quests, dungeons, weapons, and armor, all focusing on the Knights of the White Stallion. The new quests and dungeons focus on dramatically expanding the Knights' conflict with the Black Bow bandits, as well as making both the Knights and the Black Bow more vibrant and interesting. Learn why Count Leyawiin hates the Bandits so much. Save the Count's missing daughter. Confront the Black Bow leader, Gafgarian The Black. Gain your own White Stallion mount and perhaps even become captain of the Knights, giving you access to the Captain's Hall and a special Hollowed Minotaur's Horn that can be blown to call your mighty steed. The White Stallion Lodge is dramatically expanded and remade. A roaring good time for good-guy types.

This mod has several errors that require fixing in TES4Edit and the CS.

Description/Review: This mod revamps the vampires in Oblivion, making them much more dangerous, and adds several new vampire factions. You can join the Vampire Hunters Guild or the Vampires of House Serentin. It also adds tons of new items and spells, new vampire eyes, and makes vampires more beautiful in general. Creepy atmosphere abounds since most of the vampire dungeons have been revamped to make them look like vampire lairs instead of average dungeons. Highly recommended for vampire lovers (whether you love to hunt them or play as one).

No voice acting. If you play this mod, you should really use a torch or a light spell, as using night eye would ruin most of the experience. There are a few potential drawbacks to the mod: it's still a beta, meaning some icons are missing, etc., and it has some conflicts with other mods that add vampires, such as OOO/FCOM. The new factions will fight with vampires added by other mods. There is a patch for OOO/FCOM that fixes the faction problems and clipping objects.

SVVR can be viewed as lore unfriendly, partly because you now have two races of vampires, but at least now they don't all look like old rugged carpets. They mean business and that's what makes SVVR good.

StarX Vampire Deaths is highly recommended; it's a new vampire death sequence where they die in a burst of flames, leaving only a charred skeleton behind!

Description/Review: This mod primarily focuses on expanding the stealth gameplay options for thieves (taking inspiration from the venerable Thief series). However, it also includes a great random quest feature (hence the title "Odd Jobs"), in addition to significantly expanding the roleplaying possibilities for thieves. It includes full voice acting, a ton of great new items, and new AI behaviors that alter the way NPCs and guards react to you.

The Odd Jobs quests are pseudo-randomly-generated quests that all follow a similar pattern: go to a randomly-selected dungeon, locate a randomly-selected treasure stored in a randomly-placed chest, and return with it. The catch is that you have to succeed without killing anyone, and you get bonus points if you manage to do it without ever being detected. The best part? These quests never run out! New items include the Blackjack (knock people unconscious), Noisemakers (distract opponents while you sneak past undetected), Vine Arrows (create climbable vines for circumventing obstacles and making quick getaways), Gas Arrows (put enemies to sleep), Water Arrows (extinguish lights), Grease Arrows (slippery traps), and more. New AI behaviors include Suspicion (NPCs now notice odd occurences around them, like lights going out or unconscious bodies lying around, and suspicious actors will actively search for you), Unconscious (NPCs and creatures can be rendered unconscious, and while unconscious, they can be drowned, looted, and dragged around, etc.), Crime (normal civilians will flee to the guards to report your crimes, and guards will not arrest or fine you unless they can actually see you), and more. Highly recommended for sneaky types. TESNexus MOD of the Month for February 2008.
